Preview: Fresno State Bulldogs at Saint Mary’s Gaels MORAGA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Saint Mary’s Gaels look to continue their winning momentum when they host the Fresno State Bulldogs in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at McKeon Pavilion. Saint Mary’s (7-4) enters on a two-game win streak following a 62-54 victory at Grand Canyon on Sunday. The Gaels have relied on a balanced attack, with Jada Hunter scoring 12 points in the win and Malia Latu adding a team-high 18. Hunter, a key player to watch, is averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds over her last four contests. Fresno State (4-4) seeks to rebound from a difficult 65-45 home loss to Pepperdine last Saturday. The Bulldogs’ offense has struggled recently, failing to reach 50 points in three of their four losses this season. The Bulldogs will lean heavily on guard Emilia Long, who has been a bright spot. Long is coming off a 23-point performance against Pepperdine and averaged 19.7 points over a three-game stretch from Nov. 28-29. Her ability to score and facilitate, evidenced by a seven-assist game at New Mexico State, will be critical against a Saint Mary’s defense allowing just 56.5 points per game. The Gaels have been strong at home this season, posting a 4-1 record in Moraga. Their defense will be tested by Long, but they counter with their own recent efficiency, having won close games against San Jose State and Grand Canyon. For Fresno State, finding secondary scoring behind Long is imperative. Only Avery Watkins (8 points) joined Long in scoring more than five points against Pepperdine. This matchup marks the final tune-up for Saint Mary’s before a weeklong break. Fresno State continues a road swing before returning home to face Chicago State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST Wednesday.
