FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Interstat) — A surging Fort Wayne women’s basketball team looks to continue its strong start when it hosts struggling Milwaukee in a Horizon League matchup Wednesday at Gates Sports Center. The Mastodons (6-4) enter having won four of their last five games, including a decisive 68-52 victory over Wright State on Sunday. They are led by standout guard Alana Nelson, who is averaging 21.3 points over her last four contests. She scored a game-high 26 points with six rebounds in the win over Wright State. Fort Wayne’s recent success contrasts sharply with Milwaukee’s season. The Panthers (2-8) have lost six straight games, most recently a 56-68 home defeat to Youngstown State on Dec. 5. During the skid, Milwaukee has struggled offensively, failing to reach 60 points in five of those six losses. A key matchup will feature Nelson against Milwaukee’s Tierney Madigan, the Panthers’ most consistent scorer during their difficult stretch. Madigan is averaging 12.2 points over her last five games, including a 17-point performance against Youngstown State. Fort Wayne has found success at home this season, going 5-1 at Gates Sports Center, with the lone loss coming to then-Nebraska. Milwaukee is 1-4 in true road games. The Mastodons won both meetings last season. Wednesday’s game is the Horizon League opener for both teams.
