The Golden Gophers (6-3) fell 100-99 to Maryland on Sunday in a marathon Big Ten Conference opener, despite a career performance from guard Grace Grocholski. The sophomore played all 47 minutes, scoring 31 points and adding six assists and four rebounds. Minnesota, which also got a 13-point, 12-rebound, seven-assist effort from Amaya Battle in the loss, has shown a potent offense, averaging 80.2 points in its six wins but just 57.7 in its three defeats. Alabama A&M (3-6) enters on a two-game winning streak, having defeated Miles 77-55 on Sunday and Tuskegee 64-44 last Thursday. Both victories came at home against non-Division I opponents. The Bulldogs have struggled against higher-level competition, losing by an average of 28.3 points in defeats to Ball State, Cincinnati, Nevada, Alabama, UAB and Mississippi. A key matchup will feature the teams’ leading guards. Grocholski averages a team-high 15.6 points for Minnesota. For the Bulldogs, Kaila Walker is coming off a 16-point, three-assist performance against Miles and has scored in double figures in three of her last four games. Minnesota holds a distinct advantage in schedule strength. Its losses have come against Maryland, Alabama and Kansas — all power-conference foes — while its wins include a 90-47 rout of Marquette. Alabama A&M’s victories are against Talladega, Tuskegee and Miles. This is the first meeting between the programs. Following this game, Minnesota will host Wyoming on Sunday. Alabama A&M continues a road swing at North Alabama on Dec. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at Williams Arena.
