TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — Two surging women’s basketball teams coming off their first losses of the season will look to rebound when Eastern Kentucky visits Arizona at McKale Center on Wednesday night. The Lady Colonels (7-1) saw a seven-game win streak snapped in their last outing, a 74-64 home victory over Army on Nov. 29. They are led by dynamic guard Althea Kara Angeles, who is averaging 10.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. Angeles is coming off a near triple-double against Army, posting 11 points, six rebounds and eight assists in 39 minutes. Forward Liz Freihofer adds 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest. Arizona (6-2) has dropped two straight after a 6-0 start, falling 72-69 to New Mexico on Sunday and 63-57 to Southern on Dec. 3. The Wildcats are paced by guard Lani Cornfield, who scored 20 points and dished seven assists in the loss to New Mexico. She averages 13.5 points and a team-high 6.4 assists per game. Forward Tanyuel Welch contributes 13.1 points per game. Eastern Kentucky’s high-powered offense averages 78.4 points per game and has scored 80 or more points four times this season. Arizona’s defense, allowing just 62.6 points per game, will be tested. The Wildcats have struggled offensively during their skid, averaging only 63 points in the two losses. This marks the first meeting between the programs. For Eastern Kentucky, a win would represent a significant non-conference road victory against a Power Five opponent. Arizona seeks to steady itself before entering a tough stretch of its schedule. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST.
