SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum before conference play begins will meet Sunday when the Utah State Aggies visit the San Diego Toreros in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Both teams enter with 3-6 overall records. Utah State has lost two straight, including a 70-34 road defeat at Oregon on Nov. 23 in its most recent outing. San Diego looks to rebound from a 63-55 home loss to Binghamton on Wednesday. The matchup features a contrast in standout performers. Utah State is led by guard Aaliyah Gayles, who has been a consistent offensive force. She scored 17 points in a season-opening win at Cal State Bakersfield and added 16 points in a victory over Omaha. Despite the team’s recent struggles, Gayles averaged 10 points over the two road losses in Oregon. San Diego’s strength lies in the paint with forward Ayla Williams, who is coming off a dominant 16-rebound, 12-point performance against Binghamton. Williams has been a rebounding pillar, also grabbing 14 boards in a win over New Mexico State on Nov. 24. Her defensive presence was highlighted by a four-block game at Arkansas-Little Rock. For Utah State, supplementing Gayles’ scoring will be key. Sophie Sene pulled down eight rebounds against Oregon, and Rachel Wilson added six points and four boards in that contest. The Aggies’ offense must improve after being held to 34 points in their last game. San Diego will rely on more than just Williams. Guard Hallie Rhodes erupted for 25 points in the loss to Binghamton, providing a crucial scoring spark the Toreros have often lacked this season. Finding consistent secondary scoring behind Rhodes and Williams remains a challenge. The game represents a final tune-up for both squads before demanding schedules resume. Utah State begins Mountain West Conference play at Colorado State on Dec. 20. San Diego opens West Coast Conference action at Santa Clara on Dec. 28. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon in San Diego.
