Preview
Preview: Delaware State Hornets at UCF Knights OVIEDO, Fla. (Interstat) — The UCF Knights look to rebound from a narrow home loss when they host the Delaware State Hornets in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at CFE Arena. UCF (6-3) enters the contest after a 70-67 defeat to Stetson on Wednesday, a game in which guard Leah Harmon scored 19 points. The Knights had won four of their previous five, including a 57-56 road victory at Rice on Nov. 28. Harmon has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 18.1 points per game over her last seven contests. She dropped a season-high 27 points in the win at Rice. Delaware State (3-6) seeks to end a two-game skid, most recently falling 68-45 at Old Dominion on Monday. The Hornets have struggled offensively against Division I competition, averaging just 53.6 points in their six losses. Their three wins have come against Felician, Bloomfield College and Saint Mary’s (CA), whom they defeated 83-38 on Nov. 22. A key matchup will feature Harmon against Delaware State’s Amya Scott. Scott, the Hornets’ leading scorer in three of the last five games, is coming off a 13-point performance at Old Dominion. She has scored in double figures in five of her last seven outings. UCF holds a distinct advantage in rest, having last played on Wednesday, while Delaware State will be playing its third game in seven days. The Knights also boast a stronger resume, with wins over Rice and East Carolina, while the Hornets’ lone D-I victory was against a Saint Mary’s team that has yet to win a game. This game marks the first meeting between the programs. For UCF, it serves as a final tune-up before a challenging stretch that includes games against BYU and a Big 12 Conference slate beginning in January. Delaware State continues a difficult road swing, facing Maryland and Georgetown next week. Tip-off is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The Knights are heavily favored, but will need to contain Scott and improve their perimeter defense after allowing Stetson to hit 10 three-pointers. Delaware State aims to control the tempo and find scoring beyond its top option to spring an upset.
