Preview: Providence Friars at Saint Johnâs Red Storm NEW YORK (Interstat) â A pair of Big East womenâs basketball teams looking to rebound from conference-opening losses meet Sunday when the Providence Friars visit the Saint Johnâs Red Storm at Carnesecca Arena. Providence (6-3, 0-1 Big East) arrives after a 47-61 defeat at Xavier on Thursday. The Friarsâ offense struggled, shooting just 30.2% from the field. Teneisia Brown led the team with 12 points in that contest. The junior guard has been a consistent contributor, averaging 10.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season. She has recorded two double-doubles, including a 14-rebound performance against Bryant on Nov. 30. Saint Johnâs (7-2, 0-1) also seeks redemption following a 52-60 home loss to Creighton on Thursday. The Red Stormâs offense, which averaged 71.1 points in its first eight games, was held in check. Standout guard Brooke Moore scored 14 points in the loss and paces the team with an average of 17.0 points per game. She has scored 20 or more points in three games this season, including a 25-point outing in a narrow win at Georgia Tech on Nov. 28. The matchup features a contrast in recent form. Providence has lost two of its last three games, while Saint Johnâs had its six-game winning streak snapped by Creighton. Both teams will aim to tighten their defenses after each allowed 60 points in their last outing. Historically, Saint Johnâs holds a 50-23 advantage in the series, though the teams split their two meetings last season, each winning on their home court. Following this game, Providence will host Rhode Island on Dec. 10. Saint Johnâs travels to face Stony Brook on the same date. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST Sunday at Carnesecca Arena on the campus of St. Johnâs University.
