ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging West Georgia women’s basketball team looks to extend its winning streak when it visits struggling South Carolina State in a nonconference matchup Sunday at SHM Memorial Center. The Wolves (4-2) have won three straight games, most recently an 83-63 victory over UNC Wilmington on Wednesday. West Georgia’s offense has been potent during the streak, averaging 72 points per game. Guard Asia Donald has been the catalyst, averaging 18 points over her last five games. She scored a season-high 23 points in 32 minutes against UNC Wilmington. Jasmine Jones added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists in that win, while Sydne Tolbert contributed 20 points. South Carolina State (2-8) seeks to halt a seven-game skid. The Bulldogs are coming off a 64-44 home loss to High Point on Friday. Their only wins this season came against non-Division I opponents Trinity Baptist and Morris. Guard Mya Byrd leads the Bulldogs, averaging 9.7 points per game. She scored 14 points in the loss to High Point. The Bulldogs have struggled offensively during their losing streak, failing to reach 60 points in six of those seven games. West Georgia’s early schedule has been challenging, including a 100-59 loss at Oregon on Nov. 3. The Wolves have since found their footing with a balanced attack. South Carolina State has faced a difficult stretch, with recent losses to Power Five programs Georgia and UCF. The Bulldogs will need to improve defensively after allowing an average of 73.4 points during their losing streak. This is the first meeting between the programs. Following this game, West Georgia travels to Florida on Dec. 14, while South Carolina State begins a road trip at Alabama State on Dec. 12. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon.
