Preview
NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — The high-powered and eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners host the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Lloyd Noble Center. Oklahoma (8-1) enters riding a seven-game winning streak, highlighted by a 103-98 overtime victory over then-North Carolina State on Wednesday. The Sooners’ offense has been prolific, averaging 95.2 points during the streak. Sophomore guard Aaliyah Chavez, a national player of the year candidate, leads the charge. She is coming off a 33-point, 4-assist performance against the Wolfpack and has scored 29 or more points in three of her last five games. “Her ability to control the game and score at all three levels is special,“ Oklahoma coach Baranczyk said of Chavez. “But we know we have to be sharp in all phases.“ Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-5) arrives with momentum after a 56-52 road win at Wichita State on Friday. The Hawks have shown resilience, winning three of their last four, but this marks a significant step up in competition. Senior forward Lainey Allen, who posted 12 points and a block in 36 minutes against the Shockers, is a key interior presence. She has three double-doubles this season and will be crucial on the boards against a physical Oklahoma frontcourt. The Hawks will aim to control tempo and limit turnovers against Oklahoma’s aggressive defense. Guard Kalise Hill, who dished out eight assists in the win at Wichita State, will be tasked with managing that pressure. “We have to be disciplined and defend for 40 minutes,“ UMES coach Batchelor said. “They’re explosive, so we need to execute our game plan with precision.“ Oklahoma’s lone loss came on the road against then-UCLA in November. Since then, their offense has found a devastating rhythm. The Sooners have surpassed 100 points four times this season. Beyond Chavez, they feature a balanced attack with forwards Raegan Beers and Sahara Williams, who each scored 21 points in the overtime win over NC State. This is the first-ever meeting between the programs. For Oklahoma, it serves as a final tune-up before a marquee showdown with in-state rival Oklahoma State next weekend. For Maryland-Eastern Shore, it is a formidable opportunity to test itself against one of the nation’s elite teams before returning to a more favorable stretch of its schedule. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST Sunday. The game will be broadcast on SoonerVision on ESPN+.
