Preview
EVANSTON, Ill. (Interstat) â A key early-season Big Ten womenâs basketball matchup unfolds Sunday when the No. 7-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes visit the Northwestern Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Ohio State (6-1) enters on a five-game winning streak, most recently delivering a historic 130-32 rout of Niagara on Nov. 30. The Buckeyesâ lone blemish is a road loss to powerhouse Connecticut. Northwestern (6-2) looks to rebound after back-to-back losses to Kansas and Missouri, which followed a 6-0 start. The game features a compelling contrast in star power. Ohio State is fueled by the dynamic playmaking of guard Ava Watson, who is coming off a near triple-double with 15 points and 10 assists against Niagara. Northwestern relies heavily on the prolific scoring of forward Grace Sullivan, who has averaged 25.4 points over her last five games, including a 31-point, 13-rebound performance at Missouri. âThis is a great test for us early in the conference landscape,â Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said. âNorthwestern is tough at home and has one of the most explosive players in the country in Sullivan. Our defensive focus will be critical.â Northwestern coach Joe McKeown emphasized the need for a complete effort. âOhio State is deep, athletic, and they pressure you for 40 minutes,â McKeown said. âWe have to handle their system and match their intensity. Our recent setbacks have shown us areas we must improve.â The Buckeyesâ high-octane, turnover-forcing defense will challenge a Wildcats squad seeking offensive consistency beyond Sullivan. Ohio Stateâs balanced attack, which saw Dasha Biriuk score 25 and Brynleigh Martin add 21 in the record-setting win, presents a multifaceted problem for Northwesternâs defense. Sundayâs contest opens the Big Ten schedule for both teams. Ohio Stateâs next conference game is at Purdue on Dec. 31, while Northwestern resumes league play at home against Iowa on Jan. 5.
