MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Maryland Terrapins put their perfect record on the line Sunday when they visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Big Ten women’s basketball matchup at Williams Arena. Maryland (10-0) has dominated its non-conference slate, winning by an average margin of 33.2 points. Their most recent outing was a 92-44 rout of Mount Saint Mary’s on Wednesday. The Terrapins’ high-powered offense, averaging 85.8 points per game, has been fueled by efficient scoring and depth. A key player for Maryland is guard Oluchi Okananwa, who is coming off a 17-point performance in just 14 minutes against Mount Saint Mary’s. Over her last five games, Okananwa has shown explosive scoring ability, including a 23-point outing against George Mason on Nov. 23. Minnesota (6-2) aims to hand the Terrapins their first loss and secure a signature conference win. The Golden Gophers have rebounded from a two-game skid in late November with consecutive victories, including a 77-40 win over Samford on Monday. Sophomore guard Tori McKinney has been a consistent contributor, scoring in double figures in three of the last four games, including 13 points and four assists against Samford. The Golden Gophers’ two losses came against Kansas (63-57) and Alabama (63-58), demonstrating an ability to keep games tight against strong competition. They will need a disciplined defensive effort to slow Maryland’s transition game and contain its multitude of scoring options. This contest marks the conference opener for both teams. Maryland’s schedule intensifies after this, with games against Indiana and Ohio State looming in early January. Minnesota faces a tough stretch later this month with road games at Indiana and Michigan. Sunday’s tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST at Williams Arena, known as “The Barn.” The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
