NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Two Nashville women’s basketball programs seeking momentum will meet Sunday when the Lipscomb Bisons host the Tennessee State Tigers at Allen Arena. Both teams enter the nonconference matchup on losing streaks and with struggling overall records. The Tigers (1-6) have dropped five of their last six, including a 53-64 home loss to William & Mary on Nov. 29. The Bisons (2-6) have lost five straight since a Nov. 13 win over Johnson, most recently falling 60-63 to Tennessee-Martin on Thursday. Tennessee State will lean on guard XaiOnna Whitfield, who is coming off a team-high 13-point, 4-assist performance in the loss to William & Mary. Her backcourt play will be crucial for a Tigers offense that has been held under 60 points in four of its six losses this season. Lipscomb counters with forward McKayla Miller, who has provided consistent production during the skid. Miller has scored in double figures in four of the last five games, including a 14-point effort against Tennessee-Martin. Her activity on both ends, evidenced by multiple blocks in three games this season, will be key against Tennessee State. The Tigers’ lone win came in an 82-76 shootout against North Alabama on Nov. 19, a game in which they shot 46% from the field. Replicating that efficiency will be a challenge against a Lipscomb defense that has kept three of its last four opponents under 70 points. For the Bisons, offensive consistency remains the primary concern. The team has failed to reach 70 points in any of its six losses this season and will look to exploit a Tennessee State defense that has allowed an average of 82 points per game in its defeats. This city rivalry game offers a final local tune-up before both teams embark on difficult stretches. Following this contest, Tennessee State hosts Chattanooga on Dec. 11, while Lipscomb faces a tough road test at Purdue on the same date. Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon at Allen Arena.
