STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — A surging Georgia Southern looks to continue its winning ways when it hosts a Furman team seeking consistency in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles (5-3) have won four straight, including a dominant 70-44 victory over North Florida on Thursday. Destiny Garrett has been instrumental, averaging 17.8 points during the win streak and coming off a 24-point performance. She also posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Charleston Southern on Nov. 25. The Paladins (4-5) have alternated wins and losses over their past five games, most recently defeating Presbyterian 74-56 on Wednesday. Clare Coyle led Furman with 18 points and three assists in that victory. The guard has been a focal point, averaging 13.6 points per game and coming off a 22-point, 17-rebound performance in a November overtime win over Georgia State. Both teams have faced challenging early schedules. Furman’s five losses have come against high-major opponents Vanderbilt and Clemson, as well as Radford, Campbell and Georgia. Georgia Southern’s setbacks include a blowout loss to LSU and defeats to Missouri State and Florida State. Defense will be a key factor. The Eagles have held opponents to an average of 52.3 points during their four-game streak. Furman, which allows 69.2 points per game, will need to contain Garrett and McKenna Eddings, who added 13 points and five assists against North Florida. This is the final nonconference tune-up for Georgia Southern before Sun Belt play begins in January. Furman continues its road swing before returning home to face Mars Hill on Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST Sunday.
