Preview: Southern Utah Thunderbirds at Colorado State Rams FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s hottest mid-major women’s basketball teams will clash Sunday when the Southern Utah Thunderbirds visit the Colorado State Rams at Moby Arena. Both teams enter with identical 7-1 records, though Colorado State (7-2) is looking to rebound from a tough home loss to Utah, 70-58, on Thursday. Southern Utah extended its win streak to six games with a 69-59 victory over New Mexico State that same night. The matchup features a compelling duel at guard between two dynamic scorers. Southern Utah is led by Sierra Chambers, who is coming off a career-high 28 points and seven assists in 36 minutes against New Mexico State. Over her last six games, Chambers is averaging 18.2 points and 4.2 assists, serving as the catalyst for the Thunderbirds’ high-octane offense, which has topped 85 points four times this season. Colorado State will counter with Lexus Bargesser, who has been a consistent force despite the Rams’ recent setbacks. Bargesser scored 19 points in each of the losses to Utah and a narrow 62-60 defeat at Stanford on Nov. 29. She has scored in double figures in every game this season and is a primary reason the Rams boast notable non-conference wins over Gonzaga and Oregon State. The game represents a final major non-conference test for both squads before winding down their December schedules. Southern Utah’s lone loss came in a tight 76-72 game at Idaho on Nov. 15. Colorado State’s two losses, to Utah and Stanford, were by a combined 14 points. Southern Utah’s defense, anchored by Kortney Doman’s three blocks last game, will aim to contain Bargesser and Hannah Ronsiek (13 points vs. Utah). The Rams, meanwhile, must find an answer for Chambers’ multifaceted playmaking and the Thunderbirds’ depth, which saw Morgan Trigueiro add nine points in just seven minutes off the bench in their last outing. Tip-off is set for Sunday afternoon in Fort Collins. Southern Utah travels to Boise State next Saturday, while Colorado State visits San Francisco the same day.
