GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Appalachian State women’s basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it visits Clemson in a nonconference matchup Sunday at the Bi-Lo Center. The Mountaineers (6-2) enter on a three-game win streak, most recently defeating Gardner-Webb 63-53 on Monday. Guard Emily Hege led the way in that victory, scoring 16 points in 29 minutes. Hege has been a consistent contributor, averaging 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season, and will be a key player for Appalachian State’s offense. Clemson (5-4), meanwhile, seeks to rebound from a 72-48 road loss to Alabama on Thursday. The Lady Tigers have struggled against power-conference opponents, with all four losses coming against teams from the ACC or SEC. Guard Hannah Kohn, who scored 10 points against Alabama, is a player to watch for Clemson. She has averaged 5.9 points per game this season. Appalachian State’s strength has been its defense during its streak, holding its last three opponents to 53 points or fewer. The Mountaineers’ two losses came against West Virginia and Davidson, both by double digits. Clemson’s results have been mixed; the Lady Tigers have dominant wins over mid-major foes like Western Carolina (77-44) but have fallen short against ranked competition like South Carolina and Louisville. Their performance at home has been stronger, with a 3-1 record in Greenville this season. This game represents a final nonconference test for both teams before their respective conference schedules intensify later in December. For Appalachian State, a win would bolster its resume and mark its best start in recent seasons. For Clemson, it’s an opportunity to steady itself before hosting Pittsburgh on Dec. 14. Sunday’s contest tips off at 2 p.m. EST.
