BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — The struggling San Jose State women’s basketball team seeks its first win of the season Sunday when it visits California at Haas Pavilion. The Spartans (0-7) are coming off a narrow 58-53 home loss to Saint Mary’s on Thursday. Guard Maya Anderson led the way with 18 points in 34 minutes and has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 12.0 points per game. Gabriela Pato added 10 points and four blocks in the defeat, San Jose State’s seventh single-digit loss this season. California (6-3) looks to rebound from a heartbreaking 68-67 road loss at Missouri on Thursday, decided on a last-second shot. The Golden Bears’ defense, anchored by forward Sakima Walker, will be key. Walker blocked five shots against Missouri and is a force inside, coming off a 25-point, nine-rebound performance in a win over Saint Mary’s on Nov. 20. The Golden Bears have built their record on a strong home stand, winning five straight at Haas before the recent road trip. They feature a balanced attack; alongside Walker, guard Mjracle Sheppard scored 16 points against Missouri. For San Jose State, finding consistent scoring beyond Anderson is critical. The Spartans have not scored more than 64 points in a game this season and face a California team allowing just 60.2 points per contest. This is the final tune-up for both teams before midweek games. San Jose State hosts Bethesda on Wednesday, while California welcomes Idaho. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PST Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
