Preview: UNC Greensboro Spartans at South Carolina Upstate Spartans SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — A clash of Spartans is set for Saturday when the UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team visits the South Carolina Upstate Spartans at the G.B. Hodge Center. Both teams enter the nonconference matchup with 4-4 records, seeking momentum before their respective conference schedules begin in January. UNC Greensboro arrives off a dominant 96-25 victory over Columbia on Tuesday, while South Carolina Upstate earned a 55-44 road win at Western Carolina on Wednesday. The game features two of the region’s most dynamic guards. UNC Greensboro’s Tasia Johnson is coming off a near-triple-double performance against Columbia, posting 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocks in 26 minutes. Over her last six games, the versatile guard has been a consistent contributor in multiple statistical categories. She will be matched by South Carolina Upstate’s high-scoring Cassie Gallagher, who is averaging 18.6 points over her last five contests. Gallagher is capable of explosive offensive nights, evidenced by a 35-point effort at Morehead State on Nov. 22 and a 22-point outing in just 20 minutes against Montreat on Nov. 25. In the win over Western Carolina, she led all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. UNC Greensboro has shown resilience in close games, with three of its four wins coming by six points or fewer, including a 54-52 victory over Gardner-Webb and a 57-53 win at Presbyterian. Their losses, however, have largely been by wide margins against power conference opponents like Auburn, North Carolina and Stanford. South Carolina Upstate’s season narrative is similar, with solid wins mixed with lopsided losses to Southeastern Conference foes Georgia and Kentucky. Their defense will be tested by a UNC Greensboro squad that just put up 96 points. The home Spartans will rely on interior presence Aijah Palmore, who grabbed 13 rebounds in the midweek win, to counter UNC Greensboro’s Jeni Levine (20 points vs. Columbia) and Ciara Harris (13 points, seven rebounds). This marks the final nonconference home game for South Carolina Upstate before it opens Big South play in January. UNC Greensboro continues its road swing before returning home next week. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg.
