Preview: Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks at New Haven Chargers WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum will meet when the Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks visit the New Haven Chargers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Charger Gymnasium. Both sides enter with losing records. The River Hawks (3-5) fell 67-56 at Iona on Wednesday. The Chargers (2-5) are coming off an 80-54 road loss to Siena the same day. Massachusetts-Lowell will rely on guard Jaini Edmonds, who scored a team-high 16 points in 40 minutes against Iona. Over her last three games, Edmonds is averaging 14.3 points. She had 18 points in a rout of Maine-Fort Kent on Nov. 30. New Haven counters with guard Aniya McDonald-Perry, who leads a balanced Chargers attack. She posted 13 points and four assists at Siena and recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in a loss at Fairfield on Nov. 25. The River Hawks have struggled offensively in losses, averaging just 49.3 points in their five defeats. Their wins have come against Saint Anselm, Central Connecticut, and Maine-Fort Kent. New Haven’s victories are against Division III Bard and Purchase College by wide margins, but the Chargers have faced stiff competition, with losses to Siena, Fairfield, Boston University, and Iona. For Massachusetts-Lowell, forward Klimentina Modeva is coming off a 13-point performance at Iona. For New Haven, Lindsay Hogan scored 14 points against Siena. This is the first meeting between the programs. Following this game, New Haven hosts Yale on Monday. Massachusetts-Lowell travels to face DePaul on Dec. 11. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
