OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A surging Northern Colorado women’s basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it visits struggling Omaha in a nonconference matchup Saturday at Baxter Arena. The Bears (7-2) have won four of their last five games, including a 72-59 victory over Missouri-Kansas City on Wednesday. Omaha (1-7) seeks to halt a six-game skid following a 74-43 road loss to Idaho State the same day. Northern Colorado’s success has been fueled by efficient offense and the consistent play of guard Tatum West. The standout junior is averaging 13.8 points per game and is coming off an 18-point performance against UMKC. Over her last five contests, West has scored in double figures each time, including a 19-point outing in just 17 minutes in a rout of Chadron State on Nov. 28. The Mavericks have faced a difficult early schedule, with their lone win an 88-47 decision over St. Mary on Nov. 6. Guard Regan Juenemann has been a bright spot, leading the team in scoring in the loss at Idaho State with 11 points. She has reached double figures in two of her last three games. Northern Colorado’s offense has been potent, eclipsing 70 points in five games this season. Beyond West, Aniah Hall (15 points vs. UMKC) and Neenah George provide scoring depth. The Bears’ two losses came by narrow margins to Denver and on the road to then-Arizona. Omaha has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 78.6 points during its losing streak. The Mavericks will need to contain West and slow the Bears’ perimeter attack to find traction at home. This game marks the first meeting between the programs. For Northern Colorado, it is the final tune-up before a Dec. 16 road game at in-state rival Colorado. Omaha faces a quick turnaround, visiting Nebraska on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST Saturday.
