DENVER (Interstat) — A surging Idaho Vandals squad looks to rebound from its first loss in over a month when they visit the Denver Pioneers in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Magness Arena. Idaho (7-2) brings a potent offense to Colorado, averaging 82.2 points per game. That firepower will be tested against a Denver (3-5) team that has struggled offensively but shown an ability to keep games close, with four of its five losses coming by single digits, including a 66-65 heartbreaker at Eastern Washington on Wednesday. The Vandals are led by standout forward Debora Dos Santos, who is coming off a dominant 22-point, 15-rebound performance in Idaho’s 92-89 loss to Oral Roberts on Dec. 3. In her last three games, Dos Santos is averaging 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in limited minutes, providing efficient production in the paint. Denver will counter with guard Coryn Watts, who has been a consistent scoring threat. Watts averages 20.1 points per game and has scored at least 18 points in six of Denver’s eight contests this season. She logged 19 points and five assists in the narrow loss to Eastern Washington, playing a full 38 minutes. Idaho’s high-scoring attack features other key contributors like Kyra Gardner (17 points, 6 rebounds vs. Oral Roberts) and Hope Hassmann (16 points, 6 assists). The Vandals had won six straight prior to the Oral Roberts defeat, a streak that included decisive wins over Wichita State (83-61) and Colgate (82-53). The Pioneers have relied on a slower pace and defense, holding opponents to 62.6 points per game. Their path to an upset likely requires controlling tempo and limiting Idaho’s transition opportunities. Denver’s three wins have all come at home this season. Saturday’s contest is the final tune-up for both teams before significant upcoming stretches. Idaho visits California on Dec. 10, while Denver hosts MSU Denver on Dec. 9 before a road test at Kansas. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Magness Arena.
