BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Two surging women’s basketball teams meet Thursday when the Florida Gators visit the Virginia Tech Hokies at Cassell Coliseum. The Gators (8-1) enter on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Georgia Tech 65-56 on Saturday. Guard Liv McGill led the way with 27 points and six assists. Florida’s lone loss came on the road at Navy. Virginia Tech (6-2) is also coming off a quality road victory, beating Oregon State 78-67 last Saturday. Guard Mel Daley scored 24 points and Carleigh Wenzel added 13 points and six assists for the Hokies, whose losses are to BYU and James Madison. The matchup features contrasting strengths. Florida’s offense has consistently scored in the 70s and 80s, while Virginia Tech has relied on a defense that has held four opponents under 60 points this season. The game is the final non-conference test for both programs before upcoming league play. Florida begins Southeastern Conference action Jan. 1 at Tennessee. Virginia Tech opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at home against Duke on Dec. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Thursday, Dec. 4.
