CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the South Carolina Upstate Spartans visit the Western Carolina Catamounts in a nonconference women’s basketball game. The Spartans (3-6) arrive after a 55-41 loss at Kennesaw State on Friday. Cassie Gallagher led the team with 17 points in that defeat. South Carolina Upstate’s wins have come against non-Division I opponents Montreat and Erskine, and Division I South Carolina State. Western Carolina (2-7) is looking to rebound from an 84-64 home loss to Temple on Sunday. Taj Hunter scored a team-high 18 points in that game for the Catamounts, while Ally Hollifield dished out seven assists. Like their opponent, the Catamounts’ victories are against non-Division I foes Tusculum and Virginia-Lynchburg. Both teams have struggled against higher-caliber competition this season, with each suffering lopsided losses to Power Five opponents. The game at Ramsey Center offers a chance for either squad to secure a rare Division I win before league play begins next month. South Carolina Upstate continues its road swing at UNC Greensboro on Saturday. Western Carolina hosts Queens (N.C.) on Sunday.
