EL PASO, Texas (Interstat) — The unbeaten UTEP women’s basketball team looks to extend its perfect start when it hosts struggling Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners (6-0) are off to their best beginning in years, coming off a 69-52 home win over Denver on Saturday. Ivane Tensaie scored 26 points in that victory, while Sirviva Legions added 17. UTEP’s early schedule has featured mostly home games, with its only true road win coming at Missouri-Kansas City. The visiting Islanders (1-5) have lost five straight since a season-opening win over Biblical Studies. They are allowing 78.2 points per game during the skid, including an 89-74 loss at Oral Roberts last Wednesday. K’Nari Holliday posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds in that contest, and Chelsea Wooten added 18 points. This nonconference matchup marks the first meeting between the programs in recent seasons. UTEP will aim to exploit its defensive strength against an Islanders squad searching for consistency. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST Wednesday. UTEP travels to TCU on Saturday, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi visits Lamar on Dec. 15.
