STANFORD, Calif. (Interstat) — The Tennessee Lady Volunteers look to rebound from a lopsided loss when they visit the seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinal in a marquee nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. Tennessee (5-2) arrives in Palo Alto after a 99-77 defeat at UCLA on Sunday. Janiah Barker scored 25 points in the loss, with Talaysia Cooper adding 11 points and eight assists. The Lady Volunteers’ two losses have come on the road against ranked opponents (UCLA, North Carolina State). Stanford (8-1) narrowly avoided an upset in its last outing, edging Colorado State 62-60 on Saturday behind 18 points from Nunu Agara. The Cardinal’s only defeat was a 66-62 loss at Florida Gulf Coast. They have been dominant at home, winning by an average of 38 points in four games at Maples Pavilion this season. The matchup features two of the sport’s premier programs. Stanford’s defense, allowing just 55.4 points per game, will be tested by a Tennessee offense averaging 78.1 points. The Lady Volunteers will need to contain a balanced Cardinal attack that has seen six different players lead the team in scoring this season. Wednesday’s contest is Stanford’s final tune-up before opening Atlantic Coast Conference play on New Year’s Day. Tennessee continues a challenging road stretch before its Southeastern Conference slate begins in January.
