Preview
(Interstat) — The Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks look to build on a dominant win when they visit the Iona Gaels in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday at Hynes Center in New Rochelle, New York. The River Hawks (3-4) are coming off an 82-36 rout of Maine-Fort Kent on Sunday. Jaini Edmonds led the way with 18 points, while Paris Gilmore added 14 points and five assists. Klimentina Modeva scored 13 points in just 13 minutes off the bench. Prior to that, however, Massachusetts-Lowell dropped three straight games against Division I opponents, scoring 46 points or fewer in each loss. Iona (5-1) enters on a three-game winning streak, most recently edging Illinois-Chicago 52-50 on Saturday. Isabellah Middleton posted 19 points and eight rebounds in that victory, and Zoey Ward recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Gaels’ only loss this season was a 75-44 defeat at the College of Charleston on Nov. 14. Wednesday’s game pits the River Hawks’ offense, which erupted against an NAIA opponent, against a stout Iona defense that has held its last two foes to 50 points or fewer. Massachusetts-Lowell is 0-3 on the road this season against Division I competition. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
