ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — A pivotal Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament showdown is set for Tuesday when the Merrimack Warriors and Siena Saints meet at Boardwalk Hall, with both teams carrying nearly identical records and recent postseason momentum. The seed Warriors (23-10) and the seed Saints (22-11) will tip off at 9 p.m. EDT, a rematch of a thrilling overtime contest just three weeks ago. On Feb. 20 in North Andover, Merrimack edged Siena 79-72 in overtime, completing a regular-season sweep after also winning 63-59 in Albany on Jan. 9. Merrimack enters on a high note after a nail-biting 58-57 victory over Marist on Sunday, secured by a standout performance from guard Tye Dorset. Dorset scored 23 points, including the game-winning free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining. He averaged 15.4 points in his last five games and scored 13 in the overtime win over Siena last month. Siena counters with its own dynamic guard, Justice Shoats, who is coming off a career-high 26 points in a 76-61 win over Fairfield on Sunday. Shoats has been instrumental in the Saints’ late-season push, averaging 13.7 points and 4.6 assists over his last seven contests. His backcourt mate, Gavin Doty, added 25 points in the Fairfield win, giving Siena a potent scoring duo. Both teams have shown a propensity for close games. Merrimack’s last four wins have been by an average of just 4.5 points, including a double-overtime thriller against Iona. Siena has won four of its last five, with its only loss in that span coming on the road at Fairfield. The winner will advance to the MAAC tournament semifinals on Friday. The game will be a test of resilience and execution, with Merrimack seeking a third victory this season over the Saints and Siena aiming to break through and avenge its two narrow regular-season defeats.
