INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — A spot in the NCAA tournament will be on the line Tuesday when the Detroit Titans and Wright State Raiders meet in the championship game of the Horizon League men’s basketball tournament. The top-seeded Raiders (22-11) and the sixth-seeded Titans (17-14) will tip off at 7 p.m. EDT at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, with the conference’s automatic bid to the Big Dance at stake. Wright State, which defeated Northern Kentucky 103-90 in Monday’s semifinal, enters as the favorite based on season record and seeding. However, Detroit has proven to be a formidable tournament opponent, having won eight of its last nine games, including a 70-64 victory over Robert Morris on Monday and a 77-74 win at Wright State on Feb. 12. That recent head-to-head victory gives the Titans confidence. The teams split their regular-season series, with the Raiders winning 84-82 in Detroit on Jan. 9. The matchup features two of the league’s premier guards. Detroit’s Orlando Lovejoy is playing at an elite level, averaging 21.4 points over his last eight games. He scored 21 points with six assists in Monday’s semifinal win and had 18 points in the Feb. 12 victory at Wright State. Wright State counters with Michael Cooper, who erupted for 25 points in just 24 minutes during the semifinal rout. Cooper was held to 15 points in the loss to Detroit last month and will be seeking a more impactful performance on the championship stage. Detroit’s late-season surge, overcoming a sub-.500 record in early February, has been fueled by Lovejoy’s scoring and improved team defense. Wright State boasts a potent offense, having scored 90 or more points in four of its last five games. The Raiders will aim to use their offensive firepower to claim their first Horizon League tournament title since 2022. The Titans, last champions in 2021, look to complete a stunning run through the bracket and extend their season into the NCAA tournament.
