CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia men’s basketball team looks to rebound from its most lopsided loss of the season when it hosts a surging Wake Forest squad in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena. The No. 4-ranked Cavaliers (25-4, 12-4 ACC) were routed 77-51 at Duke on Saturday, a defeat that snapped a seven-game winning streak. Virginia, known for its signature pack-line defense, allowed its highest point total in conference play this season. Forward Thijs De Ridder was a bright spot in the loss, scoring 16 points, and has been a consistent force, averaging 15.1 points over his last seven games. Wake Forest (15-14, 8-8) arrives with momentum after an 88-83 home victory over Syracuse on Saturday. The Demon Deacons have won four of their last six, with guard Myles Colvin erupting for a career-high 32 points in the win against the Orange. Colvin is averaging 18.4 points over his last five contests, providing a critical scoring punch for a team fighting to reach .500 in league play. The matchup pits Virginia’s nation-leading defense, allowing just 54.2 points per game, against a Wake Forest offense that has scored 83 or more points in three of its last five wins. The Demon Deacons will need similar efficiency to challenge the Cavaliers at home, where Virginia is 14-1 this season. Virginia won the season’s first meeting 78-60 in Winston-Salem on Jan. 10. De Ridder led the Cavaliers with 17 points in that game, while Wake Forest was held to 38.6% shooting. A win would secure a double-bye for Virginia in the upcoming ACC tournament. Wake Forest seeks a résumé-building road victory to bolster its postseason aspirations. Following this game, Virginia hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday. Wake Forest returns home to face California the same day.
