MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Interstat) — A tight Southwest Athletic Conference rematch is set for Tuesday when the Southern Jaguars visit the Alabama State Hornets at Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The Jaguars (13-15, 10-5 SWAC) edged the Hornets (10-18, 7-8) 69-68 in Baton Rouge just three weeks ago on Feb. 9. Southern’s Fazl Oshodi scored seven points in that victory, part of a consistent stretch for the guard. He is averaging 13.1 points per game over his last seven contests, including a 26-point performance in an overtime win at Jackson State on Feb. 2. Alabama State’s Micah Simpson was a force in the first meeting, finishing with 19 points, four assists and a block. The guard is coming off a season-high 24 points in a dramatic 89-88 road win at Alabama A&M on Saturday. Simpson has scored in double figures in five of his last eight games. Southern has won five of its last seven but is looking to rebound from an 82-71 home loss to Florida A&M last Thursday. Oshodi led the Jaguars with 14 points in that defeat. Alabama State has split its last four games, with the win over Alabama A&M providing a momentum boost. The Hornets’ offense has shown potency, scoring 79 or more points in three of those four outings. The Jaguars currently sit higher in the SWAC standings and will aim for a season sweep. The Hornets, playing at home, will seek to defend their court and avenge the narrow earlier loss. The game tips off at 8:30 p.m. EST Tuesday. After this contest, Southern travels to face Alabama A&M on Thursday, while Alabama State hosts Grambling the same night.
