Preview: San Jose State Spartans at Fresno State Bulldogs FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Mountain West teams looking to halt slides will meet Tuesday afternoon when the Fresno State Bulldogs host the San Jose State Spartans at Save Mart Center. The Spartans (8-21) enter on a two-game losing streak following an 85-73 home loss to Colorado State on Saturday. Their season has been defined by struggles, having lost 10 of their last 13 contests. The Bulldogs (12-16) have fared only marginally better, dropping five of their last six, including a 69-53 defeat to Boise State in their most recent outing. The matchup will feature a duel between two of the conference’s top scorers. San Jose State’s hopes rest heavily on guard Colby Garland, who is in the midst of a remarkable individual stretch. Over his last seven games, Garland has averaged 24.1 points and 5.3 assists while playing every minute, including a 40-minute, 28-point performance against Colorado State. Fresno State will counter with guard DeShawn Gory, its own consistent offensive force. Gory has scored 15 or more points in nine consecutive games, averaging 19.4 points during that span. He posted 20 points in the loss to Boise State. In the season’s first meeting on Jan. 6 in San Jose, Fresno State controlled the game for a 70-55 victory. The Bulldogs’ defense held the Spartans to 32.8% shooting from the field in that contest. For San Jose State, finding secondary scoring behind Garland remains a critical challenge. Melvin Bell (15 points) and Adrian Myers (10 points) provided support against Colorado State, but consistent help has been scarce. Fresno State, meanwhile, will look to rebound from a poor shooting performance after making just 34.5% of its field goals against Boise State. Tuesday’s game represents one of the final opportunities for both teams to build momentum before the Mountain West tournament. The Spartans’ only remaining scheduled game is at home against Wyoming on March 7. The Bulldogs are set to visit Grand Canyon on the same date. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST at Save Mart Center.
