Braves Host Delta Devils in SWAC Matchup LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build on rare recent wins will meet Tuesday when Alcorn State hosts Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game. The Braves (7-21) and Delta Devils (3-27) enter the 7:30 p.m. CST tipoff at Davey Whitney Complex coming off divergent results. Alcorn State fell 72-51 at Prairie View on Saturday, while Mississippi Valley State snapped a five-game skid with a 70-69 road win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff the same day. Despite their records, both teams have shown recent competitiveness in conference play. The Braves have won two of their last five SWAC contests, including an 83-65 victory over Jackson State on Feb. 21. The Delta Devils have two conference wins in their last six tries, highlighted by a 72-71 home win over Texas Southern on Feb. 21. The matchup will feature a marquee individual battle, with Mississippi Valley State guard Michael James entering on a scoring tear. James averages 23.9 points per game over his last eight contests, including a 28-point performance in the first meeting against Alcorn State, a 74-66 Braves win on Feb. 9. He is coming off a 21-point effort in Saturday’s win. Alcorn State will counter with guard Omari Hamilton, who scored 13 points in the previous victory over the Delta Devils. Hamilton has been inconsistent but provided a spark off the bench in several games, including an 11-point outing in a win over Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 14. The Braves have controlled the recent series, winning the last meeting three weeks ago. In that game, Alcorn State overcame James’s 28 points by holding the rest of the Delta Devils in check and forcing 14 turnovers. Both teams will look to improve their seeding for the upcoming SWAC tournament, where all conference members qualify. For Mississippi Valley State, a road win would mark its first winning streak of the season. For Alcorn State, it’s a chance to defend home court and sweep the season series before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday.
