Preview: Monmouth Hawks at Northeastern Huskies BOSTON (Interstat) — A surging Monmouth team looks to continue its push toward a winning season when it visits struggling Northeastern in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. The Hawks (16-14) enter on a two-game winning streak after a 73-57 victory over Elon on Saturday. They have won six of their last nine games. The Huskies (6-22), meanwhile, are mired in a nine-game losing skid, most recently a 76-65 defeat at Hampton. Monmouth guard Jason RiveraTorres has been a catalyst during the team’s improved play. Over his last eight games, the standout is averaging 17.1 points and 3.6 assists per contest. He scored 25 points in a win over Stony Brook on Feb. 26 and posted 17 points and five assists against Elon. Northeastern will counter with guard Youri Fritz, who has shown flashes despite the team’s struggles. He recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds against Hofstra on Feb. 21 and scored 13 points in each of his last two outings. The teams met earlier this season in West Long Branch, New Jersey, with Monmouth securing an 81-68 win on Jan. 19. In that game, the Hawks built a 15-point halftime lead and never looked back. For Monmouth, a victory would secure a season record above .500. For Northeastern, the game represents a chance to halt a lengthy slide and find a positive note in a difficult season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
