ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) ā A pivotal late-season Southeastern Conference menās basketball clash with significant NCAA Tournament seeding implications is set for Tuesday night when the Alabama Crimson Tide visit the Georgia Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum. Both teams enter March on hot streaks. Alabama (22-7, 12-4 SEC) has won eight consecutive games since a Feb. 1 loss at Florida, vaulting to the top of the conference standings. Georgia (20-9, 10-6), under second-year coach Mike White, has won four of its last five, including an 86-78 victory at Kentucky on Feb. 17, to solidify its position on the tournament bubble. The Crimson Tideās offense, the nationās highest-scoring unit, is fueled by guard Latrell Wrightsell. The senior is averaging 18.1 points over his last eight contests, including a 25-point performance in a critical 71-69 road win at Tennessee last Saturday. He is complemented by backcourt mates Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway, who combined for 35 points in the victory over the Volunteers. Georgia counters with its own high-scoring guard in Jeremiah Wilkinson. The junior has been a model of consistency, scoring 18 or more points in five straight games. He poured in 28 in a narrow loss at Vanderbilt on Feb. 25 and added 18 points, three assists and a block in the Bulldogsā most recent win, an 87-68 rout of South Carolina. This matchup pits Alabamaās potent, fast-paced attack against a Georgia defense that has held its last five opponents to an average of 77 points. The Bulldogsā interior defense, anchored by Somto Cyril (2 blocks vs. South Carolina), will be tested by Alabamaās relentless drive-and-kick scheme. Alabama won the first meeting this season, 95-89, in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 10. The stakes are elevated for the rematch. A win secures at least a share of the SEC regular-season title for the Crimson Tide. For Georgia, a victory over a top-10 opponent would provide a signature resume boost ahead of Selection Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
