NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Winthrop team looks to solidify its standing near the top of the Big South Conference when it visits a Charleston Southern squad known for thrilling finishes on Thursday. The Eagles (20-9) enter CSU Field House having won seven of their last eight games, their only loss in that span a narrow 89-87 road defeat at High Point on Feb. 21. The Buccaneers (13-16), meanwhile, have seen eight of their conference games decided in overtime or by five points or fewer this season, including a 107-96 double-overtime loss to Longwood in their last outing. Winthrop’s success is fueled by forward Logan Duncomb, who is playing at an all-conference level. Over his last six games, Duncomb is averaging 21.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, including a 23-point, 14-rebound performance in the loss at High Point. His versatility as a scorer and passer has been central to the Eagles’ offense. Charleston Southern will counter with guard A’lahn Sumler, who is coming off a historic triple-double: 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 41 minutes against Longwood. Sumler has scored 16 or more points in nine consecutive games, providing the offensive firepower for a Bucs team that ranks among the league’s highest-scoring but has struggled defensively. In the first meeting this season on Jan. 7, Winthrop held off Charleston Southern 81-77 at home. The Eagles have dominated the recent series, winning 12 of the last 13 matchups. A Winthrop victory would keep pressure on the conference leaders and secure a 20-win regular season. For Charleston Southern, the game represents a chance to play spoiler and gain momentum before its regular-season finale at UNC Asheville on Saturday. Winthrop hosts Presbyterian on the same day to close its schedule. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST at the CSU Field House.
