RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch with postseason implications is set for Thursday when California Baptist hosts Texas-Arlington at CBU Events Center. The Lancers (19-8, 9-5 WAC), sitting near the top of the conference standings, aim to complete a regular-season sweep of the Mavericks (15-12, 7-7). California Baptist won a thrilling 87-77 overtime contest in Arlington on Jan. 31. In that game, the Lancers erased a late deficit to force overtime and dominated the extra period. Texas-Arlington will look for revenge and seeks to steady its season after losing four of its last five games, including a 54-66 home loss to Utah Valley on Saturday. The Mavericks are led by guard Marcell McCreary, who scored 19 points with six rebounds and five assists in the first meeting against CBU. McCreary is averaging 13.1 points over his last eight games. California Baptist enters having dropped two straight on the road, most recently a 46-65 loss at Utah Valley. Guard Jordan Mueller, who played 10 minutes in the Jan. 31 win over UTA, has seen increased playing time in recent weeks. The Lancers have been strong at home this season, boasting a 12-2 record in Riverside. The matchup features contrasting styles. The Mavericks will rely on McCreary’s creation and look to control the tempo, while the deeper Lancers will leverage their home-court advantage and defensive intensity. A CBU win would solidify its position for a high seed in the upcoming WAC tournament, while a UTA victory would provide a crucial quadrant-one road win and bolster its conference tournament standing. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST. California Baptist’s next game is at home against Tarleton State on Saturday. Texas-Arlington continues its road trip at Tarleton State on March 5.
