(Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams looking to build on rare recent wins will meet Thursday when Stonehill hosts Saint Francis (PA) in a Northeast Conference matchup at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks (9-19) and Red Flash (7-22) enter with two of the league’s poorest overall records, but both are coming off victories that snapped prolonged slides. Stonehill defeated Le Moyne 77-68 on Feb. 21, ending a five-game losing streak. Saint Francis (PA) beat New Haven 73-67 on Feb. 24, halting a seven-game skid. The Jan. 19 meeting between the teams in Loretto, Pennsylvania, was decided by a single possession, with Saint Francis (PA) holding on for a 63-61 win. That result gives the Red Flash a potential mental edge in the rematch. A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top recent performers. Stonehill will rely on guard Davante Hackett, who is coming off a career-high 30-point, six-rebound performance in the win over Le Moyne. Over his last eight games, Hackett is averaging 14.0 points and 5.1 rebounds. For the Red Flash, forward Gestin Liberis has been a consistent bright spot. He scored 19 points in the win over New Haven and is averaging 11.1 points over his last 10 contests. His production will be crucial against Stonehill’s interior defense. Beyond the star players, both teams will seek more consistent secondary scoring. For Saint Francis (PA), Zion Russell and Chris Moncrief combined for 27 points in the New Haven win. Stonehill received strong support from Chas Stinson (16 points, nine rebounds) and Hermann Koffi (12 points) in its last outing. The game represents a critical opportunity for both programs to gain momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
