JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum for the Conference USA tournament will meet Thursday when the Jacksonville State Gamecocks host the Delaware Blue Hens at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The Gamecocks (13-14 overall) enter the contest having lost four of their last five, including a narrow 82-78 road defeat at Sam Houston on Feb. 21. Jacksonville State holds a slim 13-14 overall record but will look to defend its home court, where it is 9-5 this season. Delaware (9-18) arrives on a two-game skid, most recently falling 78-66 at Middle Tennessee. The Blue Hens have struggled on the road, posting a 3-10 record away from home. This matchup is a quick rematch; Jacksonville State edged Delaware 67-64 in Newark on Jan. 2. The game features two of the conference’s most dynamic scorers. Delaware’s Justyn Fernandez has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 21.6 points over his last eight games. He scored 22 points with six rebounds in the first meeting against Jacksonville State and is coming off a 22-point performance in the loss to Middle Tennessee. For Jacksonville State, guard Mostapha El Moutaouakkil is a potent threat. He erupted for a career-high 38 points in the loss to Sam Houston and has scored 27 or more points in three of his last five outings. His scoring burst will be central to the Gamecocks’ attack. Both teams have shown a tendency for close games, with Delaware involved in four contests decided by three points or fewer since late January. Jacksonville State has lost its last three games by an average of just 5.3 points. The Gamecocks will aim to improve their standing before a tough closing road trip, while the Blue Hens look to snap their road woes and avenge January’s narrow loss. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST Thursday.
