Preview: Xavier Musketeers at Providence Friars PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum for the stretch run will meet Wednesday night when the Xavier Musketeers visit the Providence Friars in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game. Both teams enter with sub-.500 records. Xavier (13-14) has lost three of its last four, including a 75-80 defeat at Butler on Saturday. Providence (12-15) snapped a two-game skid with a 71-68 road win at DePaul the same day. The matchup features two of the conference’s top scorers. Xavier will lean on guard Tre Carroll, who is averaging 22.3 points over his last six games. He scored 24 in the loss to Butler and had 28 in an overtime loss to Villanova on Feb. 17. Providence counters with guard Jaylin Sellers, who is coming off a 21-point performance against DePaul. He erupted for a season-high 36 points in a double-overtime win over Butler on Feb. 4. In the teams’ first meeting this season, Xavier secured a 97-84 home victory on Jan. 10. Carroll scored 21 points in that contest, while Sellers was held to 16 for Providence. The Musketeers have struggled on the road, losing their last three away games. The Friars have had their own difficulties, particularly at home where they have lost three of their last four at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. With both teams outside the projected NCAA tournament field, the game carries weight for seeding in the upcoming Big East tournament. A win for either would provide a critical boost ahead of challenging final stretches. Xavier visits Villanova on March 7 after hosting Georgetown on Feb. 28. Providence faces a tough road test at Creighton on Feb. 28 before hosting Marquette on March 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST Wednesday. The game will be televised on FS1.
