Preview of UNLV at Grand Canyon Men’s Basketball PHOENIX (Interstat) — A tight Western Athletic Conference rematch is set for Wednesday when the Grand Canyon Antelopes host the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels at GCU Arena. The Antelopes (16-10) will be looking for revenge after falling 80-78 in Las Vegas on Feb. 7. That game is part of a recent uneven stretch for Grand Canyon, which has alternated wins and losses over its last six contests. They are coming off a 70-65 home loss to Wyoming on Saturday, despite a 29-point performance from guard Makaih Williams. Williams, averaging 20.4 points over his last five games, remains the focal point of the Antelopes’ offense. His backcourt matchup with UNLV’s Howie Fleming will be critical. UNLV (14-13) arrives with momentum from a dominant 91-66 road win at Air Force on Saturday. Fleming, a guard, recorded a rare triple-double in that victory with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. His versatile play has been key for the Rebels, who have won three of their last four games. Beyond Fleming, UNLV’s Kimani Hamilton (27 points vs. Air Force) and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn (21 points vs. Air Force) provide additional scoring punch. The Rebels have shown a high offensive ceiling, scoring 86 or more points in four of their last six outings, but have also been vulnerable defensively in losses. Both teams are jockeying for position in the conference standings with the regular season winding down. Grand Canyon holds a slight edge in the overall win column, but UNLV’s recent head-to-head victory provides a psychological boost. The Antelopes are 10-3 at home this season, while UNLV is 4-7 in true road games. Containing Williams and leveraging Fleming’s all-around game will be the primary tactical battle in a contest that could significantly impact postseason seeding.
