SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — A West Coast Conference rematch with major implications arrives Wednesday when the surging Gonzaga Bulldogs host the Portland Pilots at McCarthey Athletic Center. Gonzaga (27-2, 13-1 WCC), riding a five-game win streak, seeks to avenge its lone conference loss this season and clinch at least a share of the WCC regular-season title. The Bulldogs fell 87-80 at Portland on Feb. 4, a result that stands as the highlight of an otherwise challenging season for the Pilots (12-17, 4-10). Portland’s victory last month snapped a 22-game losing skid to Gonzaga. Replicating that feat in Spokane, where the Bulldogs are 14-0 this season, presents a far steeper challenge. The Pilots have lost four of five since that upset, including a 59-71 defeat at Seattle on Saturday. The matchup features two of the league’s top performers. Portland guard Joel Foxwell, who torched Gonzaga for 27 points and eight assists in the first meeting, is averaging 23.4 points over his last five games. He scored 35 in a loss to Pepperdine on Feb. 18. Gonzaga counters with versatile forward Davis Fogle, who had 10 points in the loss at Portland. He leads a balanced Bulldogs attack coming off a 71-62 win over Pacific, where he posted a team-high 18 points. Beyond the revenge narrative, Gonzaga aims to solidify its case for a seed in the NCAA tournament. Portland, meanwhile, looks to salvage its season by sweeping the conference powerhouse and building momentum for the WCC tournament. The Bulldogs’ interior defense, anchored by Graham Ike (20 points, three blocks vs. Pacific), will be tested by Foxwell’s penetration and a Pilot team that shot effectively in the first matchup. Gonzaga has held opponents to 62.2 points per game during its current streak. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST Wednesday. Gonzaga’s next game is at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, while Portland hosts San Diego.
