PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Two Big East teams seeking momentum for the conference tournament will meet Tuesday when the Xavier Musketeers visit the Providence Friars at Dunkin’ Center. Both teams enter with sub-.500 records, as Xavier sits at 13-14 and Providence at 12-15 overall. The matchup is a quick rematch from Jan. 10, when the host Musketeers handled the Friars 97-84 in Cincinnati. The visiting Musketeers will lean on the hot hand of guard Tre Carroll, who is averaging 23.1 points over his last seven games. He is coming off a 24-point effort in a narrow 80-75 loss at Butler on Saturday and scored 28 in an overtime loss to Villanova last Tuesday. His scoring burst will be central to Xavier’s hopes on the road. Providence counters with its own high-volume scorer in Jaylin Sellers. The guard poured in 36 points in a double-overtime win over Butler on Feb. 4 and had 21 in Saturday’s 71-68 road win at DePaul. Containing Sellers will be a primary defensive focus for a Xavier team that has lost four of its last five. The game features two squads familiar with close contests. Xavier’s last three losses have come by a total of 11 points, including two in overtime. Providence has also played in four overtime periods in its last five games, going 2-2 in that stretch. With the Big East tournament looming, both teams are jockeying for seeding. A win for either would provide a critical boost ahead of challenging final stretches. Xavier visits Villanova on March 7, while Providence travels to Creighton this Saturday before hosting Marquette next week. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Dunkin’ Center.
