JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — A surging Arkansas State looks to solidify its Sun Belt Conference standing when it hosts a Southern Mississippi team seeking a late-season push on Tuesday night. The Red Wolves (18-11) have won five of their last six games, including a 102-94 road victory at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. They return to the Convocation Center, where they are 11-3 this season. Arkansas State’s offense has been potent, scoring 90 or more points in four of its last six contests. Southern Mississippi (15-14) arrives after an 86-81 home win over Old Dominion, snapping a two-game skid. The Golden Eagles will need to reverse a recent trend of road struggles, where they have lost five of their last six away games. A key matchup will feature Southern Mississippi forward Isaac Taveras against Arkansas State’s TJ Caldwell. Taveras is coming off a strong performance with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists against Old Dominion, and has averaged 13.5 points over his last four games. Caldwell provides efficient scoring for the Red Wolves, averaging 10.6 points per game on the season and dropping 17 points in just 26 minutes in the win over ULM. The teams met earlier this season, with Arkansas State securing a 93-86 victory in Hattiesburg on Dec. 20. The Golden Eagles will aim for payback and to climb back to .500 in conference play, while the Red Wolves look to continue their momentum in the final stretch before the Sun Belt tournament.
