HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Interstat) — The Marshall Thundering Herd will look to solidify its standing and complete a regular-season sweep when it hosts the Old Dominion Monarchs in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday at Cam Henderson Center. Marshall (18-11) enters the matchup with momentum from a strong February, having won five of its last seven games. The Thundering Herd edged Old Dominion 81-79 in Norfolk just two weeks ago on Feb. 11, a game that figures to provide motivation for both sides. The Herd is led by dynamic guard Jalen Speer, who is coming off a spectacular 39-point performance in a narrow loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday. In the first meeting against Old Dominion, Speer posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, playing all 40 minutes. His backcourt play will be central to Marshall’s offensive plans. Old Dominion (10-19) seeks to halt a two-game skid and play spoiler on the road. The Monarchs have shown flashes, including home wins over Louisiana-Lafayette and Georgia State this month, but consistency has been elusive. Guard LJ Thomas is a key catalyst, averaging 13.4 points over his last eight games. He scored 18 against Marshall in the previous matchup and is fresh off a 15-point, 6-rebound, 4-assist effort at Southern Miss. The game represents a contrast in seasons. Marshall is battling for improved seeding in the upcoming Sun Belt tournament, while Old Dominion aims to build positive momentum heading into the offseason. The Thundering Herd’s potent offense, averaging over 80 points per game in conference play, will test an Old Dominion defense that has allowed 79.3 points per game during its current losing streak. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST Tuesday. Marshall will host Georgia Southern on Friday, while Old Dominion travels to face Georgia State.
