PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The Saint Joseph’s Hawks will look to complete a regular-season sweep and bolster their conference standing when they host the struggling Loyola Chicago Ramblers in an Atlantic 10 men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Hagan Arena. The Hawks (16-10, 7-6 A-10) enter on steadier ground, coming off a 71-65 road win at Saint Bonaventure. Guard Derek Simpson has been the engine, averaging 17.1 points and 6.4 assists over his last seven games. He orchestrated the first meeting against Loyola on Jan. 27, finishing with 15 points and 10 assists in an 85-64 victory. Saint Joseph’s has won four of its last six, with its offense frequently flowing through Simpson’s playmaking. The Hawks’ defense will aim to replicate its January performance against the Ramblers, where they forced 14 turnovers and held Loyola to 38.7% shooting. Loyola Chicago (6-21, 2-11) seeks to halt a four-game skid, most recently a 62-59 last-possession loss at Fordham. The Ramblers’ season has been defined by offensive struggles, failing to reach 70 points in 10 of their last 11 contests. A bright spot has been forward Xavier Amos, who scored 19 points in the Fordham loss and is averaging 12.4 points over his last seven games. His production will be critical for a team that ranks near the bottom of the conference in scoring. The Ramblers have lost nine of their last ten games, with their lone win in that stretch a 71-61 victory over La Salle on Feb. 3. Defense has also been a persistent issue, as opponents have scored 84 or more points in five of those ten losses. For Saint Joseph’s, the game represents a crucial opportunity to solidify its position ahead of the conference tournament. For Loyola, it’s a chance to play spoiler and build momentum in the season’s final weeks. Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon.
