Preview: Grambling Tigers at Southern Jaguars BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — The latest chapter in one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s most intense rivalries will be written Saturday when the Southern Jaguars host the Grambling Tigers at the Clark Activity Center. Both teams enter the matchup seeking momentum as the regular season winds down. Southern (12-14 overall) holds a slight edge in the standings over Grambling (11-14). The Jaguars won the first meeting this season decisively, 71-53, in Grambling on Jan. 17. Grambling arrives having lost four of its last five, including a 63-68 road loss at Prairie View on Monday. The Tigers will lean on guard Jamil Muttilib, who has been a prolific scorer recently. He poured in 25 points in 38 minutes against Prairie View and 26 points at Texas Southern on Feb. 14. However, his production has been inconsistent, scoring just two points in two of his last six outings. Southern has been more successful lately, winning three of its last five, but is coming off a narrow 73-74 loss at Texas Southern on Monday. Guard AJ Barnes has been a key contributor for the Jaguars during this stretch, scoring 16 points in that loss and 17 points in a win over Alabama A&M on Feb. 7. His playmaking and defense, evidenced by a 4-block performance at Jackson State, will be critical. The game features two teams with nearly identical records but contrasting recent forms. Grambling will aim to avenge its earlier loss and solve its offensive inconsistencies beyond Muttilib. Southern looks to protect its home court and complete a regular-season sweep, using its balanced attack to counter Grambling’s top scorer. Tipoff is set for Saturday, Feb. 21, in Baton Rouge. The game is part of the SWAC conference schedule.
