HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging High Point team will look to continue its dominant season when it hosts UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference men’s basketball matchup Thursday at Qubein Arena. The Panthers (24-4, 12-1 Big South) enter on a nine-game winning streak and boast the league’s best record. Their most recent outing was a 112-87 road rout of Gardner-Webb on Feb. 14, showcasing one of the nation’s most potent offenses. High Point has won 14 of its last 15 games, with its only conference loss coming at Winthrop on Jan. 14. UNC Asheville (12-14, 7-6) seeks to steady itself after a narrow 58-57 home loss to Presbyterian on Feb. 14 snapped a three-game win streak. The Bulldogs have been competitive in conference play but face a steep challenge against the league frontrunner. High Point won the first meeting this season decisively, 87-69, in Asheville on Dec. 31. Panthers forward Owen Aquino has been a consistent force, averaging 13.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists over his last seven games. He nearly posted a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the win over Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs will rely on forward Toyaz Solomon, who is coming off a strong stretch. He scored 24 points in a win at Longwood on Feb. 12 and has averaged 14.2 points over his last six contests. His defensive presence was notable in the loss to Presbyterian, where he recorded nine rebounds and four blocks. High Point’s high-scoring attack, which has topped 95 points three times during its streak, will test a UNC Asheville defense that has held four of its last six opponents under 70 points. The Panthers lead the Big South in scoring margin and field goal percentage. A win would solidify High Point’s hold on first place in the conference standings, while UNC Asheville aims to improve its seeding for the upcoming Big South tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
