HONOLULU (Interstat) — The surging Hawaii Warriors look to rebound from a rare road loss when they host the Cal Poly Mustangs in a Big West Conference men’s basketball matchup Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawaii (18-6, 8-3 Big West) enters the contest with the league’s second-best overall record but is coming off an 84-60 defeat at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, its most lopsided loss of the season. The Warriors had won seven of their previous eight games prior to the setback. Cal Poly (11-16, 5-7) arrives in Honolulu with renewed confidence after winning two straight home games last week, including an 89-79 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The Mustangs’ offense has found a rhythm, averaging 84 points over their last three contests. The Warriors won the first meeting this season decisively, 86-66, at Cal Poly on Jan. 15. Hawaii has historically held a strong advantage at home in the series. A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s standout guards. Cal Poly will rely on Peter Bandelj, who is averaging 16.2 points and 3.6 assists over his last five games. The junior scored 18 points in the win over UCSB and had 20 points and five assists in a narrow loss to Cal State Northridge on Feb. 5. Hawaii counters with Isaac Finlinson, who leads the team in scoring during conference play. The senior guard is averaging 13.1 points per game in Big West action, though he was held to 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the loss to CSUN. He scored 19 points in a key road win at Long Beach State on Jan. 31. For Cal Poly to pull the road upset, they must improve a defense that allows a conference-worst 80.1 points per game. Hawaii boasts one of the Big West’s most efficient offenses, shooting 47.5% from the field as a team. The game tips off at 9 p.m. HST Thursday. Hawaii’s next game is at home against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Cal Poly continues its road trip at Long Beach State on Feb. 26.
