PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big Sky Conference rematch is set for Thursday night when the Portland State Vikings host the Idaho Vandals at the Stott Center. The Vikings (17-7, 7-4 Big Sky), sitting near the top of the conference standings, look to solidify their position and complete a regular-season sweep. The Vandals (14-12, 5-6), hovering around .500 in league play, aim to avenge a narrow home loss from earlier this season and bolster their conference tournament seeding. In the first meeting on Jan. 24 in Moscow, Portland State escaped with a 69-66 victory. The Vikings have maintained their strong form since, winning five of their last seven games. Their most recent outing was a 77-65 loss at Northern Colorado on Feb. 14, which snapped a four-game win streak. Idaho arrives after a momentum-building 99-69 rout of Idaho State on Feb. 14, which halted a three-game skid. The Vandals’ conference record reflects their inconsistency, with recent road losses at Montana and Montana State preceding the dominant home win. The matchup features two of the league’s top guards. Portland State is led by Jaylin Henderson, who is coming off a 29-point performance against Northern Colorado and averaged 24 points in two games last week. Henderson scored 13 points and dished five assists in the win over Idaho last month. Idaho will counter with dynamic point guard Kolton Mitchell, who stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the win over Idaho State. Mitchell’s production, however, was limited to just two points in the first game against Portland State’s defense. A key for Idaho will be generating offense beyond Mitchell, as players like Isaiah Brickner (17 points vs. Idaho State) and Brody Rowbury have provided recent support. Portland State will rely on Henderson’s scoring and the interior presence of Tre-Vaughn Minott, who grabbed 11 rebounds in the last game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST Thursday. Portland State will look to protect its home court, where it is 10-2 this season, while Idaho seeks a critical road victory to even the season series and climb the conference standings.
