RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) ā Two teams seeking to halt prolonged slides will meet Thursday when the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners visit the UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference menās basketball matchup. Both teams enter the 7 p.m. PST tipoff at the UCR Rec Center mired in losing streaks and holding identical 3-9 records in conference play. The Roadrunners (8-18 overall) have lost six consecutive games, while the Highlanders (8-19) have dropped their last four. The matchup offers a chance for redemption and a potential season sweep. Cal State Bakersfield edged UC Riverside 67-66 in Bakersfield on Jan. 8 in the teamsā first meeting this season. A key battle will feature two of the conferenceās top scorers. For Bakersfield, guard AJ George is coming off a season-high 23-point performance in a 74-89 loss to Hawaii on Feb. 12. Over his last six games, George is averaging 10.0 points. UC Riverside will counter with high-scoring guard Andrew Henderson, who has been on a tear. Henderson is averaging 21.1 points over his last seven contests, including a 39-point outburst in a narrow 94-87 loss to Cal Poly on Jan. 31. In the Feb. 14 loss to UC San Diego, he scored 21 points. Beyond the star guards, both teams will look for supplementary scoring. Bakersfieldās Ronald Jessamy and Dailin Smith combined for 33 points in the loss to Hawaii. For UC Riverside, BJ Kolly and Marqui Worthy each added 15 points in the defeat at UC San Diego. The game pits two struggling defenses against capable offensive talents. Cal State Bakersfield has allowed an average of 86.2 points during its six-game skid. UC Riverside has conceded 78.5 points per game during its four-game losing streak. With the Big West tournament seeding on the line, both teams are desperate for a win to build momentum for the final stretch of the regular season. The Roadrunners visit UC San Diego next on Feb. 26, while the Highlanders host UC Davis on Feb. 21.
