Preview: Wichita State Looks to Sweep Season Series at East Carolina GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Wichita State Shockers will aim to solidify their position in the American Athletic Conference standings when they visit the East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday night at Williams Arena. Wichita State (16-10) enters with momentum after a gritty 81-77 home victory over Tulsa on Saturday. The Shockers have won four of their last six games. East Carolina (9-16) has shown recent signs of life, winning three of its last five, including an 85-75 road win at Rice on Saturday. The matchup features two of the league’s premier scorers. Wichita State guard Kenyon Giles is averaging 24.3 points over his last four games, coming off a 31-point performance against Tulsa. He torched the Pirates for 27 points in the teams’ first meeting last month. East Carolina will counter with guard Jordan Riley, who is in the midst of a stellar individual season. Riley is averaging 26.0 points over his last five outings, including a 35-point, 9-rebound, 5-assist effort in a win at Florida Atlantic on Feb. 1. In the Jan. 21 meeting in Wichita, the Shockers controlled the game for a 77-60 victory. Giles led all scorers while Wichita State’s defense held Riley to 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The Shockers have been more consistent this season, while the Pirates have struggled to string wins together, though their recent uptick includes two road victories. East Carolina will need a more efficient offensive performance and to find an answer for Giles to avoid the season sweep. Wednesday’s contest is the start of a critical final stretch for both teams as the conference tournament approaches. Wichita State will host Temple on Saturday. East Carolina travels to Charlotte for its next game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
